KUALA LUMPUR: The government will maintain the current price for RON95 petrol blend at RM1.90 per litre and has no plans to increase it for now, the Dewan Negara was told Wednesday.
Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim said people should ignore speculation of a price hike for RON95.
She said this in reply to a question from Senator Khoo Soo Seang
Deputy Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Rohani Abdul Karim said people should ignore speculation of a price hike for RON95.
She said this in reply to a question from Senator Khoo Soo Seang
According to her, the increase in global oil prices meant that the government would have to fork out RM14 billion for fuel subsidy this year, up from a projected RM10 billion.
"Crude oil price increases on the global market may appear to be advantageous to us but prices at the pump are still being fixed by the government who has to spend more on subsidies," she said.
She said if the government had to increase the price of RON95 fuel, it would use a formula to ensure that the move would not burden the people.
Rohani was the latest government official to seek to dampen rumours of a price increase in RON95 fuel.
Earlier this month, Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai said in the Dewan Rakyat that RON95 fuel price would not go up in the immediate term but gave no guarantees it may not do so in future as world oil prices fluctuate.
The price of RON97 petrol saw a 20 sen increase on April 1 to RM2.70 a litre.
