Eruption turns lake water black
AEST 11:30, Thu Jun 16 2011
The explosions at Chile's Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano have caused travel chaos as far away as Australia and turned a once pristine lake in neighbouring Argentina into a gloomy pool of ash.
The eruptions, which began on June 8, have gradually transformed Lake Nahuel Huapi's trout-filled waters into a murky primeval soup that seems incapable of sustaining marine life or the local tourist industry.
The lake could struggle to continue luring anglers with its previously clear water now more closely
resembling a harsh bed of salt.
