Strong quakes hit Japan's jumpy northeast

March 22, 2011 10:14PM

A SERIES of strong earthquakes rattled northeast Japan today, keeping residents on edge more than a week after a devastating tremor and tsunami battered the region.
Two 6.6-magnitude tremors and one 6.4 quake struck within two and a half hours off Japan's tsunami-stricken northeast coast, starting from 6.18pm (AEDT), the US Geological Survey reported.
There were no reports of casualties or damage and no tsunami warnings.
A record 9.0 magnitude which spawned a towering tsunami battered Japan's northeast coast on March 11, leaving more than 21,000 people dead or missing and triggering a crisis at a nuclear power plant in Fukushima.
Around 20 per cent of the world's most powerful earthquakes strike Japan, which sits on the "Ring of Fire" surrounding the Pacific Ocean.

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.0 jolted Shizuoka Prefecture and its vicinity, including Tokyo, on Tuesday evening. The US Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.1 and said it had been preceded a few minutes earlier by another 5.8-magnitude tremor.
It rumbled from a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres, with a magnitude of 6.0. The epicenter was inland, so they are saying there is no tsunami risk which is a little positive news in this worst time for Japan history. A large number of citizens have left the city. Tokyo residents had been told Tuesday that the danger posed by radiation leaking from the Dai-ichi nuclear plant in the Fukushima prefecture some 240 kilometres northeast of the city was minimal.
