MALAYSIA:RINGGIT AT 13-YEARS HIGH VS USD!

Ringgit Paling Kukuh Pada Tahap 2.99 Dalam 13 Tahun

KUALA LUMPUR: Ringgit mencecah paras tertinggi dalam tempoh 13 tahun pada 2.99 berbanding dolar Amerika Syarikat (AS) buat pertama kalinya Isnin, berikutan minat belian yang kukuh dari luar negara, kata seorang pedagang mata wang.
Pada 11.40 pagi, ringgit didagangkan pada 2.9945/9975 berbanding dolar AS, paras tertinggi sejak Oktober 1997.
"Terdapat permintaan kukuh untuk mata wang tempatan dari bank-bank luar negara memandangkan ringgit masih di bawah nilai selain pelabur yakin terhadap pasaran saham dipacu oleh Program Transformasi Ekonomi," kata pedagang itu kepadaBERNAMA.
Beliau berkata ringgit masih di bawah nilai sedangkan semua mata wang Asean sudah pulih daripada krisis mata wang 1997, dengan ada antaranya kembali kepada paras prakrisis.
"Trend untuk ringgit mencatat paras yang paling kukuh sudah wujud sejak dua minggu lepas dan ia akan menarik lebih banyak pelabur tempatan dan asing ke dalam pasaran tempatan," katanya.
Pedagang itu menjangkakan ringgit akan terus meningkat antara paras 2.80 hingga 2.85 berbanding dolar AS menjelang akhir tahun, bergantung kepada dasar monetari Bank Negara Malaysia.
Antara sebab ringgit yang kukuh ialah trend peningkatannya yang selari dengan mata wang Asia lain, berikutan spekulasi bank-bank pusat di rantau ini akan menaikkan kadar faedah untuk melegakan inflasi.
Kadar faedah yang tinggi juga bermakna pulangan yang baik ke atas aset-aset tempatan.
"Ringgit juga mengukuh berikutan dolar AS yang lemah memandangkan dana-dana dipindahkan ke pasaran membangun, ketika pembuat dasar di Jepun dan AS mengekalkan kadar-kadar penanda aras kepada hampir angka sifar minggu ini," kata pedagang itu.
Beliau berkata masih ada tanda-tanda penurunan dollar US yang akan terus menyokong ringgit, yang menambah mata wang yang kukuh akan membantu membendung inflasi.

Ringgit at 13-year high on robust demand

RINGGIT

THE ringgit closed at a new 13-year high against the US dollar yesterday at 2.9920/9945 from last Friday's closing of 3.0050/0064, dealers said.

A dealer said demand for the ringgit was robust in line with Asian currencies on speculation that central banks in the region would raise interest rates to cool inflation.

The ringgit also rose against the Singapore dollar to 2.4254/4280 from 2.4355/4384 on Friday and also against the Japanese yen to 3.6461/6514 from 3.6652/6691 previously.

The ringgit was stronger against the British pound at 4.9446/9499 from last Friday's 4.9638/9687 as well as against the euro at 4.3665/3711 from 4.3762/3821 previously.

INTERBANK RATES

SHORT-TERM rates closed steady yesterday as Bank Negara Malaysia intervened in the money market to absorb surplus funds.

As a result, the overnight rate was fixed at 2.71 per cent while the one-week, two-week and three-week rates were at 2.75, 2.78 and 2.79 per cent respectively.

The total liquidity surplus in the conventional system declined to RM38.5 billion from an earlier estimate of RM49 billion.

In Islamic funds, the total liquidity surplus rose to RM7.77 billion from an earlier forecast of RM7.52 billion.

Bank Negara yesterday morning also conducted seven tenders comprising two conventional, a repo, a Commodity Murabahah Programme as well as three Al-Wadiah tenders.

It also issued a late conventional tender for RM38.5 billion of one-day money and an Al-Wadiah tender for RM6.8 billion of one-day money.

KLIBOR

THE three-month Kuala Lumpur Interbank Offered Rate (KLIBOR) futures contracts on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives closed untraded yesterday.

At close, all contracts remained at last Friday's settlement prices, with May 2011, June 2011, July 2011 and September 2011 at 96.77, 96.74, 96.64 and 96.54, respectively.

The five-year Malaysia Government Securities futures was also untraded. - Bernama
