Strong typhoon approaches Japan's southern islands

Posted  2011-5-28 11:01pm

Japan's southern islands were bracing for a powerful typhoon expected to slam into the region Saturday, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said.

A storm warning was issued for the region as Typhoon Songda, the first major storm to threaten the region this year, was forecast to pummel the islands of Miyako and Ishigaki Saturday evening before passing over Okinawa Sunday, 1,600 kilometres south-west of Tokyo.

The typhoon had maximum sustained winds of 180 kilometres per hour and gusts of 250 kph, the agency said. It was expected to bring downpours accompanied by rainfall of 60 millimetres per hour.

Thousands of people had been evacuated on the eastern coasts of the Philippines this week ahead of the storm. The country was spared a direct hit from Songda, but it lashed the country with heavy rains and winds on its way to Japan.

Strong typhoon approaches Japan's southern islands

Tokyo (May 28, 2011): Japan's southern islands were bracing for a powerful typhoon expected to slam into the region Saturday, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said.

A storm warning was issued as 'Typhoon Songda', the first major storm to threaten the region this year, was forecast to pummel the islands of Miyako and Ishigaki Saturday evening before passing over Okinawa Sunday, 1,600km south-west of Tokyo.

The typhoon had maximum sustained winds of 180kph and gusts of 250kph, the agency said. It was expected to bring downpours accompanied by rainfall of 60mm per hour.

Thousands of people had been evacuated on the eastern coasts of the Philippines this week ahead of the storm, but it and Taiwan were spared direct hits from Songda on its way to Japan. Both were lashed by heavy rains and strong winds.

The eye of Songda was about 300km off Taiwan's east coast at 0300 GMT Saturday, moving in a north-easterly direction toward Okinawa at 31 kilometres per hour, Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau said.

"Songda's speed is expected to quicken, but its power will weaken," weatherman Chiang Li-hung said. -- dpa
