Iceland's Grimsvoetn volcano, which sits at the heart of the country's biggest glacier Vatnajoekull, began erupting at the weekend for the first time since 2004.

The country closed its main international airport and cancelled domestic flights on Sunday after the eruption sent a plume of ash, smoke and steam 20km into the air.

Scientists said the coarse volcanic ash was falling to the ground, instead of spreading through the air, which suggested air travel in Europe would not be disrupted as it was last year when Iceland's Eyjafjallajokul volcano erupted.

The huge cloud of ash and smoke generated by Eyjafjallajokul forced the cancellation of thousands of flights and affected up to 10 million travellers.
