Mississippi floods
A man fishes from a flooded section of the Bill Ramsey Memorial Highway near Vicksburg, Mississippi state. The Mississippi river, already swollen by heavy rains across its huge watershed, is expected to rise an additional four feet in Vicksburg by tomorrow. Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee and Arkansas have also been hit by floods.

Floodwater flows over the Birds Point levee in Missouri after the Army Corps of Engineers blew a massive hole in it to divert water from the town of Cairo, Illinois. The diversion flooded about 130,000 acres of Missouri farmland and 100 homes in the state. Measures such as this have saved millions of people from worse disruption.
