Malaysians talk about tremors after Sumatra quake

Tuesday June 14, 2011 MYT 7:08:31 PM

PETALING JAYA: These are e-mails sent to The Star Online from Malaysians who felt the tremors from the Sumatra earthquake on Tuesday.
Send your e-mail to staronlinefeedback@gmail.com
"I felt the tremors when I was sitting at my work station. I noticed vibrations on the water dispenser and slight movement of a file on my desk." - Meor Anas, 46, engineering executive at the Sungai Selangor water treatment plant.
"I felt the tremor around 11am. I was sitting and yet my chair was swaying. It seemed to last quite long, probably around 10-15 seconds. This is the strongest tremor I've ever felt in the Klang Valley." - Edmund of Mercury Securities, 7th floor, Solaris Mont Kiara.
"The students and I felt the tables shaking and some complained of dizziness." - Teacher Daniel Chin from Kapar.
"After having spent several years in Japan, the tremor 'is just shaky and intermittent' but still quite scary." - Ahmad Badri
"We were having examinations when we were told to leave the building when the tables started shaking." - Inti college student Y.S. Yan
"Somehow I didn't feel much of the tremor but I did realise that things were slightly shaky. For a millisecond, I think, the chair I was sitting on suddenly felt as if I was using the Ogawa ez-Loop machines." - Noni Awang, 21st floor in an office located in Jalan Khidmat Usaha, Kuala Lumpur.
"I was walking up the staircase when I felt a bit dizzy. As soon as I knew something was wrong I ran back downstairs. By then many office workers were already rushing downstairs. Quite scary." - Chong, Putrajaya.
“I felt the tremors at about 11 am. The tremors lasted for 10-20 seconds. My chair shook a bit, and then I felt a little dizzy...” - Irene Lee , 12th floor, Menara Genesis , Jalan Sultan Ismail ,KL
“This is my very first experience ... and it happened twice today. Initially I didn't know it till I saw the news in The Star Online. Around 8am, I was reading some messages in on my phone after I parked my car in the office carpark. Suddenly I felt a jolt and I thought someone might have bumped into my car or playing with me. When I looked around, I didn't see anyone and I just ignored it. On the second tremor, it was around 11, that I heard noise from the window pane at my office on the 16th floor of a building along Jln Raja Chulan, KL. Then I started to feel dizzy as though the floor was moving. It lasted for a few seconds. I immediately asked my colleague on the other end of the office thru IM, but she noticed nothing. True enough, there's another tremor felt at so many places in KL. I will share this with my family when I am home later...” - Shelving Tan
“Came into the office and felt movement while sitting at my desk, I thought I was feeling dizzy. After a few seconds, my colleagues were asking around if anyone felt it? Only then I realised it was a tremor.” - veera @ cyberjaya
“I was sitting at my work station on the fourth floor when I felt my desk and chair shaking for a good 5-10 seconds. At first I thought I was feeling dizzy and about to black out, but when my colleagues started asking each other about it, I knew I wasn't dreaming! An evacuation order came soon after. Location: Petaling Jaya” - Aman AR
"I stay in a 2-storey bungalow in Section 16, Petaling Jaya. This morning as I was sleeping, I felt my bed shake. It immediately reminded me of the same incident on July 24 2010, when I was also on my bed sleeping and I felt my bed and the floor shake - like a train running through my room. Both times, I got up from bed to realise it was a tremor from an earthquake. People always say they feel tremors because they are in high-rise buildings and offices. I, on the hand, stay in a 2-storey house and I also feel it. Weird! - Chay Wan Nee

Indonesia has lifted yet another tsunami warning after a 6.9 magnitude quake jolted Sumatra today, 160 kilometres south-west of the city of Bengkulu at a depth of 10 km.
Bengkulu was one of the areas worst hit by a powerful 8.4 magnitude quake that rocked Sumatra's west coast on Wednesday.
Now at 14, the death toll is slowly creeping up and officials in Indonesia say the number of injured has also reached 56.
For the sixth time this week another tsunami alert was sounded and then lifted for the Sumatran coast.
About 2,000 buildings are now estimated to have either collapsed or been damaged by the initial tremor and the smaller aftershocks and new quakes which followed it.
A tonne of medicine and four tonnes of food along with other relief assistance has arrived in the city.
Despite damaged infrastructure, the aid is reaching most areas by road, except for the Mentawai islands where 150 houses fell.
That famous surfing destination can only be reached by boat or by air.
