Japan Struck again by 6.6 quake

A strong quake that rattled Tokyo and Northeastern Japan has now been dowgraded to magnitude 6.6, the US Geological Survey reported.

The quake was originally reported as at 7.1. The USGS said the very shallow quake was centred 22 kilometres southwest of Iwaki, south of the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant. The quake shook buildings in Tokyo and a wide swathe of eastern Japan.
Aftershocks have repeatedly rattled the region, but there is little left in the northeast to ruin.
Japan issued a tsunami alert after the quake which comes one month after the devastating March 11 disaster. The 9.0-magnitude quake and tsunami it generated on March 11 are believed to have killed more than 25,000 people and caused billions of dollars in damage.
The meteorological agency said a one-metre wave could hit Ibaraki prefecture, the area worst hit by last month's massive tsunami.
The Pacific Tsunami Center said the quake would had not trigger a widespread tsunami that could reach the US and Canadian West coasts.
The operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex said there were no irregularities at the plant following the latest earthquake.
Tokyo Electric Power Co (TEPCO) also said workers outdoors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant were evacuated after the quake.
Workers were told to withdraw and stay in a quake-proof building.
Narita airport temporarily closed a runway for safety checks.
